Fraxel laser for acne scarring
What is fraxel laser treatment? What can it do for you?
Fraxel is a new laser treatment that allows pinpoint treatment of acne damage (amongst a range of other skin conditions) stimulating collagen production and new skin.
The Fraxel Laser produces thousands of tiny laser beams that can be thought of as minute columns over your skin that are very fine but penetrate deeply into the dermis. They reach into this middle layer of skin and remove diseased or damages areas and prompt the healing of fresh healthy skin in its place.
Because Fraxel only targets a relatively small part of your overall skin area healing takes place more quickly than if the whole area was affected.
Who can benefit from Fraxel laser treatment?
Virtually anybody of any age who has acne scarring.
Fraxel is effective for a wide range of people and also can make your skin feel smoother and more supple. It can also help correct uneven colouring and brown spots from ageing and sun damage and fine wrinkles. Your doctor will discuss your objectives with you and advise you on what areas should be treated for the best outcome.
What happens in a typical treatment?
First your skin will be thoroughly cleansed. Next your eyes will be protected from the Fraxel Laser light and a local anaesthetic will be applied before the treatment begins.
How will you feel during and after treatment? What are the potential side-effects?
As the laser moves over your skin you may feel a slight prickling sensation but will feel no discomfort. After treatment you will feel a sensation similar to mild sunburn but this resolves after 1-2 hours. Your skin will have a pinkish tone over the next week or so but this is a sign that healing is taking place. There may also be some swelling at this time but this generally passes within 2 or 3 days.
While the action of the Fraxel laser actually promotes healing and the epidermis starts repairing itself immediately there may be some changes in it as this healing takes place. Your skin may have a bronze appearance that lasts for 2-14 days depending on the nature of your treatment and may also vigorously exfoliate as old dead cells are shed and are replaced by new younger ones. This is normal and using a moisturiser will stop this looking too obvious.
When will you see results? What do you need to do after the treatment to ensure the best result?
Your skin will start to feel and look different around a week after your first treatment. Sun avoidance is important and the skin needs to be moisturised. We will guide you on everything you need to do to get the best possible result.
How many sessions are necessary?
This depends on the doctor's diagnosis but we usually recommend 1-5 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks apart for the best results.
While this information is intended to give you a good overall picture of how Fraxel laser treatment may help your acne your situation is unique. The best way to find out if this is the right answer for you is to come and see us. There are no sales pitches and we will explain all the options and help you to make the right decision.

How much does it cost?
We understand you are curious to know how much the procedure you are thinking of having might cost.
The truth is that with many procedures your cost can fall within a fairly wide range. While we do offer online consultations for liposuction we believe it is unethical to give a cost estimate without gaining a proper understanding of your needs.
Your body, your skin and your expectations are different to anybody else's. Some patients have been attracted by an initial quote only to find the final price was a lot higher. Sometimes these initial estimates do not cover such elements as theatre fees or the cost of an anaesthetist for example.
Our philosophy is simple. We want you to be fully informed, we want you to understand all your options and have one accurate price quoted once. Over more than 20 years of cosmetic practice we have found that this is what most of our clients want too.
