Acoustic Wave Therapy
Acoustic Wave Therapy

What is Acoustic Wave Therapy? How does it work? What can it do for you?

Acoustic Wave Therapy is a new technology for reducing cellulite that works differently to laser, heat and radio frequency modalities. Having seen it's capabilities we are one of the first centres in Australia to have this new treatment available.

In fact this treatment was discovered as a by-product of its use in injury recovery back in 1987. when a number of female athletes were undergoing AWT for torn and strained hamstrings. As well as improving the injury the medical practitioners noticed that the treatment also produced tightened skin and produced a remarkable improvement in the appearance of cellulite.

The cause of cellulite lies in the structure of women's connective tissue beneath their skin that is different to men's. (That said, around 10% of men still get cellulite)

In women fat cells are stacked vertically rather than parallel to the skin and bound with connective tissue that runs down to the muscles beneath. The fundamental cause of cellulite is the hardening of this connective tissue that causes it to pull downwards. When this happens the fat tissues tend to poke outward like cushions creating the dimpled appearance of the skin. This compression of the fat cells by the tightened connective tissue also restricts circulation and thus the input of nutrients and the removal of waste products from the area.

AWT improves the appearance of cellulite in a number of ways:

By disrupting and stretching the connective tissue so it pulls down less and results in a smoother skin appearance

This stretching of the connective tissue also improves microcirculation so nutrients can be delivered and waste products removed.

By creating an inflammatory response in the skin. The resolution of this boosts collagen production and leads to thicker more elastic skin with improved texture so the appearance of any dimpling is improved.

Who can benefit?

AWT is effective for a wide range of clients of both sexes who wish to improve the appearance of cellulite and have tighter, better textured and smoother skin. For men in particular it can help reduce “love handles”

What happens in a typical treatment? How will you feel during treatment?

The treatment is carried out with you lying comfortably on a specially designed treatment bed.

There are two stages to a treatment, which takes about 45 minutes in total. The first stage is designed to immobilize fat cells and most patients find this is not uncomfortable and even relaxing. In the second stage the sensation of vibration is much stronger and accompanied by a louder sound. This can cause some pain and discomfort in some tender areas but we generally find that patient's tolerance increases as they have more sessions.

How will you look and feel after the treatment?

While the treated area will look red there is very little discomfort after the procedure and you can carry on with your normal life. This redness is largely due to the stimulation of new blood circulation in the area.

When will you see results?

Full results are seen about 12 weeks after your last treatment. This is because your body needs this time to produce the amount of new collagen for you to see the full effect.

How many sessions are necessary?

You will normally be treated 1 – 2 times per week for a series of 10 treatments.

The testing data available to us indicates that it is necessary to have a full program of 10 treatments for you to gain optimum results.

Maintenance treatments are recommended every 6 months (3 – 4 treatments).
