While breast augmentation should be a carefully considered decision it is also a procedure that we often see making a life changing improvement to a client's self image.
Our promise is to make sure you have a thorough understanding of every aspect of the procedure, give you the best medical attention and look after you every step of the way.
What can breast augmentation do for you?
Breast augmentation can give you the breasts that you want, breasts that you are much happier with, or that are much closer to the breasts you used to have.
It can restore the size and shape of your breasts after breastfeeding or just turn back the passage of time.
It is important that you recognise that no ones breasts are ever absolutely identical and no surgeon can guarantee to make them so. What we aim at is an improvement in line with the objectives that we set with you.
As with all procedures at The Ashley Centre we will always give you a realistic idea of what can be achieved and what we believe is in your best interest from a medical and aesthetic point of view.
What is involved in the augmentation procedure?
After a thorough examination we work with you to decide what size and shape implants are most appropriate given your personal objectives and body characteristics. This is never rushed and we don't proceed until you are entirely happy with the solution.
Augmentation surgery involves making a small incision and inserting a silicone or saline breast implant of an appropriate size and shape either under or over the top of your pectoral muscle. Both techniques have advantages however what is best for you will depend on what your goals are and your build. Placement under the muscle may give a more natural looking result, for example, if you do not have much breast tissue over the top of the muscle.
The incision to insert the implant is usually made under the fold of the breast but an also be made around the nipple or under the arm, Which incision will give the best result for you will be discussed between you and your surgeon however the objective is always accuracy of insertion and minimal scarring. Skilfully performed and barring unusual individual medical factors this scarring can be assimilated so as to be effectively invisible over a number of years.
Saline versus Silicone implants
We can present the case for both of these to you. The vast majority of patients now choose silicone implants because these offer a more natural look, are extremely safe and have benefited from a lot of technical development in recent years.
How safe are breast implants?
Silicone implants have been fitted to around 2 million women and the technology of these has reached a high level. The capsules that hold the silicon are very strong and supple and once healing has taken place there is no limitation whatsoever on normal activities that include scuba diving, tennis, flying and sex!
Leakage is very rare and even if this were to occur the modern silicon filling is not a liquid but a gel and therefore cannot flow out of the capsule even if this is ruptured. The other factor is that the body naturally surrounds the implant with tissue, which holds the implant in place and acts as a further barrier to any leakage from the capsule.
A large number of well-respected scientific studies have concluded that silicon implants do not cause connective tissue disease or cancer. (1,2 3) even where there has been a rupture (4).

How will you feel after the procedure? What can you do to ensure you achieve the best result?
Following surgery you are expected to feel drowsy and often patients feel discomfort between the breasts on arrival home and the next day.
You should make sure you remain well hydrated and eat well as this assists healing.
We recommend that you wear a comfortable and well fitted bra when ever possible but to some extent you can judge your own comfort and the effect of your procedure will not be nullified if you do spend some time with your bra off.
The first two days following your procedure you may see some swelling around the breast and chest. This fluid can be the result of fluid given during surgery and the healing process. It will resolve within a few days. Though you may need to take it easy if you get tired, you can undertake normal activities such as driving 3 days after surgery.
In the weeks and months following the procedure your breasts may continually change shape, which is completely normal as the skin stretches and gains fullness. Initially your breasts may be swollen 5% -10% larger than their final size however this will subside over the first few weeks.
You may have a tightness in your breasts for 5-10 days and this can persist for as long as 3 weeks but should improve steadily as the skin adjusts to the new shape and weight of your breasts.
You should avoid strenuous activity for the first 3 weeks. Relaxed walking is recommended for this time, but after this you can gradually reintroduce light upper-body exercise.
After 6 weeks your breasts will feel much more like they are apart of you and you can start to reintroduce any strenuous exercise you were doing before surgery if you feel ready for this. This can include such activities as running, swimming and gym work. Though we will supply you with written information as a guide to your recovery if you are unsure of anything you should not hesitate to ask us.
Living with your new breasts
Essentially there should be no restrictions from your pre-surgery lifestyle as a result of breast augmentation.
Sport and exercise should not be limited, and you should be able to participate in any high intensity recreational activities. Your implants can only be ruptured through extreme force such as a car accident or extreme trauma and even then can be replaced if necessary.
Your implants will not interfere with self-examination because your breast tissue is in front of the implant and mammography is still highly encouraged allowing over one year after your surgery. It is important to inform your radiographer about your implants because special techniques will need to be used.

How much does it cost?
We understand you are curious to know how much the procedure you are thinking of having might cost.
The truth is that with many procedures your cost can fall within a fairly wide range. While we do offer online consultations for liposuction we believe it is unethical to give a cost estimate without gaining a proper understanding of your needs.
Your body, your skin and your expectations are different to anybody else's. Some patients have been attracted by an initial quote only to find the final price was a lot higher. Sometimes these initial estimates do not cover such elements as theatre fees or the cost of an anaesthetist for example.
Our philosophy is simple. We want you to be fully informed, we want you to understand all your options and have one accurate price quoted once. Over more than 20 years of cosmetic practice we have found that this is what most of our clients want too.
