Muscle relaxants and filler treatments for facial lines and wrinkles
How do muscle relaxants and filler treatments work? What can they do for you?
Collagen is a protein that acts like glue that holds the cells of your skin together. When we are young this is thick and supple but as your body ages this disappears naturally every year so the skin it used to fill out becomes lined and furrowed. Over time facial movements such as smiling frowning and laughing exaggerate these often undesirable features. Muscle relaxants subtly reduce these actions in specific areas and thus reduce the display of lines. Fillers work by filling out key areas so the lines become less obvious.
What treatments are available?
The Ashley Centre offers all the most popular and widely used international treatments that are well tried and tested and have a good safety profile. We are not able to list the brand names of these here due to the TGA's (Therapeutic Goods Administration) rulings, but these include all the brand names you may have heard.
Muscle relaxant treatment: involves injecting very small amounts of muscle relaxant medications to reduce the action of key muscles that cause frown and laugh lines. The areas treated are very specific and your overall facial expression is not noticeably different to onlookers except that your facial creasing will be reduced and you will look younger.
Collagen replacement: involves the injecting of collagen into the skin below the affected area. It acts to supplement the skin’s lost collagen, filling out lines or furrows to give you younger softer skin. The new collagen does not require skin testing.
The latest filler treatments used at The Ashley Centre are different to collagen. The beauty of these products is that they do not require allergy testing.
At times, muscle relaxants and fillers are used at the same time for immediate effect.
Because we are licensed to use all the filler products on the market, this enables us to provide the best alternative for each patient. All the products are suitable for creating fuller features, most notably lips, eliminating wrinkles and depressions. However, some are safer than others, some give better results, and others last longer. We have the experience and skill to offer the best alternatives.
Fat transfer (also lipo-augmentation or micro-lipoinjection). Fat tissue from elsewhere in the body, e.g. thighs and abdomen, is injected into other areas we want augmented, e.g. lips, cheeks, lower lids, depression, breasts and genital areas. Even aged and thinned out hands can be plumped out to a more youthful state. Surgical and post-trauma defects can also be improved with fat transfer.
Who can benefit from muscle relaxants and filler treatments?
All of these treatments are suitable for both women and men. Patients of virtually any age can benefit.
What happens in a typical treatment?
Collagen and other filler treatments are performed by injection by our specialist nursing staff and doctors. Local anaesthetic is used where necessary.
Fat transfer is performed on a walk-in, walk-out basis. Local anaesthetic is first applied to the donor and recipient areas. A liposuction syringe is then used to remove fat cells from a tightly packed area like the buttocks, thighs or abdomen. Excess fluid is removed, and then the tissue is injected with a new needle under the designated wrinkle and repeated until the desired look is achieved. If fat is collected during another procedure, your surgeon can freeze and store it for a future transfer.
How will you feel after treatment?
After wrinkle removal with muscle relaxants In the first few hours after treatment you may experience redness swelling and tenderness in the treated areas. This is normal and resolves quickly and spontaneously.
After filler treatment: During the first 24 to 48 hours after treatment you may experience redness, swelling and tenderness in the treated areas. These reactions are normal and usually resolve in 24 hours but may take longer.
What you need to do after filler treatment to ensure the best result?
Apply a cold compress on the treated areas to relieve swelling and possible bruising. You should avoid strenuous exercise, drinking alcohol and exposure to extremes of hot and cold as this opens up blood vessels and may increase bruising or swelling. The full effect may not be visible for 2-10 days or until any residual swelling subsides.
When will you see results from muscle relaxant treatment?
The effect of muscle relaxants is not immediate and can take 2 -14 days to show full effect. The effect is not permanent and muscle relaxation may last 3-4 months. With repeated use the effect can last longer.
Fat transfer treatment:
Over the first few months some of the fat will be absorbed by your body. The remaining fat will usually stay in place for years. Some patients may require 3-4 treatments over a 6-12 month period to optimize the effect.
How many sessions are necessary?
Filler treatments: One treatment is usually sufficient although the treatment can be done in increments. Some fillers are permanent
Relaxants: Treatment is taken one session at a time and judged for effect. One session usually achieves muscle relaxation. The lines themselves resolve with repeated treatment. Muscle relaxation usually lasts 3-4 months.
After a fat transfer, some of the transferred tissue will be absorbed. The remaining tissue will usually stay in place for years. Patients can require three or four treatments over a six to twelve month period.

How much does it cost?
We understand you are curious to know how much the procedure you are thinking of having might cost.
The truth is that with many procedures your cost can fall within a fairly wide range. While we do offer online consultations for liposuction we believe it is unethical to give a cost estimate without gaining a proper understanding of your needs.
Your body, your skin and your expectations are different to anybody else's. Some patients have been attracted by an initial quote only to find the final price was a lot higher. Sometimes these initial estimates do not cover such elements as theatre fees or the cost of an anaesthetist for example.
Our philosophy is simple. We want you to be fully informed, we want you to understand all your options and have one accurate price quoted once. Over more than 20 years of cosmetic practice we have found that this is what most of our clients want too.
