Suture lift for facial lines and wrinkles

What is a suture lift? How does it work? What can it do for you?

Also known as the Hollywood lift, thread lift or APTOS, stitch lift or safe lift, this has recently attracted a lot of media attention.

It is a walk-in walk-out facial rejuvenation procedure that can deliver a younger facial and neck appearance depending on your anatomy and the skill of your surgeon.

This provides a low impact alternative to the traditional facelift because it is less traumatic, offers much faster recovery and is less costly. Where a traditional facelift uses surgical cutting under the neck and hairline to achieve a lifting and tightening of facial features, the suture lift achieves a similar effect using fine threads under the skin. No skin is cut away. These threads are completely invisible and anchor to the facial tissue as they are tightened to reposition loose or droopy areas. The threads or sutures are usually tied off under the neck, hairline or behind the ears where they cannot be seen.

One of the best things about the suture lift is that because the stitches in suture lift last many years they can readily be adjusted and tightened to retain a younger look as facial structures inevitably loosen with time.

Dr Ashley Granot, our surgical director, has been a pioneer of this treatment in Australia and implemented a number of new improvements to the technique of suture lifts.

Who can benefit from Suture lift?

A suture lift is an effective option for many patients who would have considered a facelift prior to the availability of this. That said, there is still a place for traditional facelifts in some circumstances, such as very bad skin or very thin skin. A suture lift is often useful for patients who have already had a facelifts but who would benefit from some minor "tidying up" work.

What happens in a typical treatment?

You do not need a general anaesthetic. The procedure can be carried out under local anaesthesia under light sedation where you will be conscious of what is going on but be in no discomfort.

A small puncture is made in the skin behind the ear or in the hairline and a long needle with a suture is threaded under the skin until it reaches the area that needs attention. The stitch is fixed to this area and returned back to the tiny hole it was inserted in then tied off and buried under the skin. Several of these stitches are usually used to keep each area in position.

How will you feel during and after treatment?

Because local anaesthesia is used there is no pain during the procedure. After this is completed there is often some pain behind the ears but this is easily dealt with by pain killers and usually settles down within 24 hours.

Initially the stitches may feel too tight but this feeling will pass as they generally loosen after a few weeks. If for any reason you would like to revise your look the stitches can readily be adjusted within the first 4 weeks after the procedure. After this period removal is more difficult as the stitches become fixed in the skin by the tissue reaction.

Because the stitches reposition the skin there may initially be a slight pucker in front of the ears. This usually adjusts itself within a few weeks but if this is not the case collagen induction therapy can be used to tighten the skin.

When will you see results? What do you need to do after the treatment to ensure the best result?

You will see the tightening and reshaping effect straight away and the overall effect will only improve as your face recovers. In general the initial swelling and discomfort improves within a few days.

This is a walk-in walk-out procedure and no dressings are required. From a clinical perspective you can return to work the next day but most people opt to take some time off till initial healing has taken place.

We would normally see you to monitor your recovery at two days, one week three weeks and four weeks after the procedure.

How many sessions are necessary?

It is usually possible to do all the work necessary in one session.

While this information is intended to give you a good overall picture of what a Suture Lift facelift involves your situation is unique. The best way to find out if this is the right answer for you is to come and see us. There are no sales pitches and we will explain all the options and help you to make the right decision.

How much does it cost?

We understand you are curious to know how much the procedure you are thinking of having might cost.

The truth is that with many procedures your cost can fall within a fairly wide range. While we do offer online consultations for liposuction we believe it is unethical to give a cost estimate without gaining a proper understanding of your needs.

Your body, your skin and your expectations are different to anybody else's. Some patients have been attracted by an initial quote only to find the final price was a lot higher. Sometimes these initial estimates do not cover such elements as theatre fees or the cost of an anaesthetist for example.

Our philosophy is simple. We want you to be fully informed, we want you to understand all your options and have one accurate price quoted once. Over more than 20 years of cosmetic practice we have found that this is what most of our clients want too.
