Laser Hair Removal

How does it work? What can it do for you?

The laser amplifies light to produce a strong, synchronised beam that has a number of medical uses. In laser hair removal this is used to gently heat the individual hair which in turn heats the pore that the hair is anchored in. Since the hair is usually darker than the surrounding skin it absorbs more heat which is transferred down to the root of the hair and inhibits further growth of the hair. After this the hair does not regrow or re-grows much weaker.

Who can benefit from Laser Hair Removal?

Both women and men can enjoy the improvements of Laser Hair Removal. Those with darker hair and fairer skin are the easiest to treat, due to the fact that darker hair absorbs the laser light more readily that lighter colours. However, our fourth generation laser technology means that people with lighter hair can also achieve excellent results.

What happens in a typical treatment? How will you feel during the treatment?

Before we undertake any treatment we assess your hair type, skin type and history and we discuss your objectives with you in detail.

The treatment is normally done with you lying down wearing goggles to protect your eyes as a precaution. Before we begin we numb your skin with a local anaesthetic gel. During treatment you may feel some warmth or heat as we heat the hair but this is minimised by our in-built cooling and Zimmer machine that blows cool air over the area.

How will you feel after treatment? Are there any possible side-effects?

Some redness may be seen immediately after treatment, lasting for two hours or more. In extreme examples only this may last beyond a day or two. This is a normal reaction to the treatment.

Some people may experience temporary pigmentation but this also usually resolves within a few weeks. Sometimes this can be triggered by sun exposure so this should be avoided for the first week after treatment. Persistent pigmentation can also be treated with a bleaching cream.

When will you see results?

Results vary amongst patients. While some of the hairs that have been treated will not regrow some will regrow much weaker and thinner and a number of treatments may be necessary to ensure that these do not return. The reason for this is that hairs need to be treated in their growing cycle rather than their resting cycle and only 60% are growing at any one time.

What should you do before the treatment to ensure the best results.

You should have at least one to two days hair growth in the areas that require treatment. It may be difficult to pin point all areas that need treatment. If the hair is longer our nurse may need to shave it to an ideal length for treatment.

For removal of facial hair please make sure you do not wear makeup (or make sure you wash this off prior to treatment).

If you are undergoing treatment with Roaccutane or Gold Therapy or have undertaken this in the last 6 months it is important that you let us know as these medications can make your skin susceptible to damage from the laser.

What do you need to do after the treatment to ensure the best results?

Some redness in the treated area is normal, but to minimise the effects we recommend that you:
  • Gently cleanse twice daily with a soothing unscented moisturising cream
  • Avoid hot or cold water - use lukewarm water in the shower
  • Avoid vigorous sponging or scrubbing
  • Avoid chlorine and other similar swimming chemicals
  • Try to minimise activities that cause perspiration
  • Avoid scented body products and perfume
  • Minimise sun exposure; use 30+ SPF sunscreen if necessary
  • Refrain from shaving
Don't hesitate to contact the clinic if you have any issue at all.

How many sessions are necessary?

Because the laser treats hairs one at a time it usually takes between 6 and 8 sessions with approximately one month to 6 weeks in between each to properly treat an area. There is no point scheduling appointments closer together as the laser needs to act on the hair in its growth phase to be effective and this only reoccurs in this time frame.

While the time taken is dependent on factors such as skin type and hair location you should be wary of clinics that promise results in fewer sessions than this. Our experience is that the best result takes time but is definitely worth it.

While this information is intended to give you a good overall picture of what Laser Hair removal involves your situation is unique. The best way to find out if this is the right answer for you is to come and see us. There are no sales pitches and we will explain all the options and help you to make the right decision.

How much does it cost?

We understand you are curious to know how much the procedure you are thinking of having might cost.

The truth is that with many procedures your cost can fall within a fairly wide range. While we do offer online consultations for liposuction we believe it is unethical to give a cost estimate without gaining a proper understanding of your needs.

Your body, your skin and your expectations are different to anybody else's. Some patients have been attracted by an initial quote only to find the final price was a lot higher. Sometimes these initial estimates do not cover such elements as theatre fees or the cost of an anaesthetist for example.

Our philosophy is simple. We want you to be fully informed, we want you to understand all your options and have one accurate price quoted once. Over more than 20 years of cosmetic practice we have found that this is what most of our clients want too.
