Labioplasty (Labiaplasty)

What is labioplasty? What can it do for you?

Labioplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure to reduce the size or change the shape of the small lips on the outside of the vagina (labia minora).

Many women are born with large or irregular labia minora. For others the appearance of these can be altered by childbirth. Either way having labia that are too large or uneven can cause embarrassment with sexual partners and discomfort and irritation in tight clothes and some sporting activities. Sometimes the need is simply to feel better about this most personal part of your body.

Labioplasty can enhance the appearance of the outer vagina, improve your self esteem and eliminate irritation. Since for the overwhelming majority of women the clitoris is the structure associated with sexual pleasure this is not affected by labioplasty and there is no loss of sexual sensation. Apart from the boost to their confidence quite a few women actually report an improvement in sensation and sexual function.

As with any treatment at The Ashley Centre we will brief you fully on all aspects of the procedure and make sure you are 100% comfortable before undertaking anything. This briefing will cover areas such as expected outcomes, recovery risks and benefits and any questions you may have.

Who can benefit from labioplasty?

Virtually any woman who has the aforementioned issues.

What happens in a typical treatment?

Labioplasty is usually performed under a light general anaesthetic. You will be asleep and feel nothing during the procedure and will awake soon after its completion.

The procedure involves making small incisions to remove the excess tissue to reduce or reshape the labia minora. All stitches are dissolvable and thus do not have to be removed. Dressings are not normally needed.

How will you feel after labioplasty? How long will your recovery take?

You can go home straight away but will feel some discomfort for the first few days after surgery but this will then decrease. We usually give patients prescriptions for analgesics for pain and antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. You can shower and resume normal light activities the next day but we recommend that you take 7 - 10 days off work. You will usually be able to resume intercourse around 30 - 45 days later depending on how fast healing takes place. This can take up to 6 weeks.

When will you need to see us for check ups?

We normally schedule check ups the day after your procedure and later at 1, 2 and 4 weeks however you can call us or come in at any time if you have any concerns.

How many treatment sessions are necessary?

Normally all issues can be covered in one treatment.

While this information is intended to give you a good overall picture of what labioplasty involves your situation is unique. The best way to find out if this is the best answer for you is to come and see us. There are no sales pitches and we will explain all the options and help you to make the right decision.

How much does it cost?

We understand you are curious to know how much the procedure you are thinking of having might cost.

The truth is that with many procedures your cost can fall within a fairly wide range. While we do offer online consultations for liposuction we believe it is unethical to give a cost estimate without gaining a proper understanding of your needs.

Your body, your skin and your expectations are different to anybody else's. Some patients have been attracted by an initial quote only to find the final price was a lot higher. Sometimes these initial estimates do not cover such elements as theatre fees or the cost of an anaesthetist for example.

Our philosophy is simple. We want you to be fully informed, we want you to understand all your options and have one accurate price quoted once. Over more than 20 years of cosmetic practice we have found that this is what most of our clients want too.
