Mesotherapy and Lipodissolve
Mesotherapy and Lipodissolve

What are Mesotherapy and Lipodissolve? How do they work? What can they do for you?

Mesotherapy involves injection of medication into the skin and superficial fat layer. Lipodissolve (lipolysis) is injection of medication into the deeper fat layer. The terms are often used synonymously.

While these treatments are relatively new in Australia they have been widely practised in Europe for over 20 years and have a huge clinical database over there.

Mesotherapy and Lipodissolve are both relatively low cost, non surgical, injection procedures used mostly to correct small localised areas of fat or cellulite and for skin rejuvenation.

These are usually specific areas on the thighs, buttocks, flanks and face. Lipodissolve is also very effective as a contouring treatment with the ability to thin or reshape fat deposits in problem areas such as “love handles” where the area is not too large and deep. If this is the case then liposculpture is a better option.

Both these therapies stimulate the body's circulatory, lymphatic and immune system to create a biological response that reverses abnormal physiology. The active ingredients can include various vitamins and medicines and a naturally occurring enzyme called Lecithin that is responsible for breaking down fats in our body. Because this mimics what is actually happening in the body there are minimal side-effects.

In 2003 the safety and effectiveness of Mesotherapy was confirmed in a clinical study of 208 patients conducted in Austria where the success rate was rated as 92%. (Hexcel D. Journal of Drugs and Dermatology 2003)

Who can benefit from Mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy is an effective treatment for ageing skin on the face and neck, cellulite and localised fat deposits. The ideal candidate for Mesotherapy is someone in good health who is within 10kg (25 lb) of their ideal body weight but who has some stubborn areas of fat that have not responded to exercise.

Almost anyone between the ages of 18 and 75 can be treated but Mesotherapy is not suitable for people who are insulin dependant diabetics, are pregnant or have a history of stroke, blood clots or heart disease.

What happens in a typical treatment?

Mesotherapy involves making many tiny injection points just under the skin with a very fine needle in the target area. The composition of what is injected in your case will depend on the doctor’s diagnosis and the problem you are trying to correct. Because only a very tiny amount of the medication is injected at each point and the needles are very fine the procedure is not generally considered painful by most patients and most report nothing more than the sensation of pinpricks. A typical treatment takes between 20 and 30 minutes.

How will you feel during and after treatment?

During the procedure you will feel some pricking from the needle however most patients say this is easily tolerated.

After treatment you may feel some bruising and some swelling. How severe this is depends on the extent of your treatment. We will always recommend a treatment of an appropriate size to ensure comfort and safety.

What are the potential side-effects?

Potential side-effects include redness and bruising. Far more rare possibilities are infection, reaction to products, pigmentation and very rarely ulceration. Most of these rare possibilities are guarded against by our pre operative and operative procedures.

When will you see results? What do you need to do after the treatment to ensure the best result?

Results are not immediate as the body takes time to eliminate the fats using its own systems. Patients usually see a reshaping of the area and improvement in dimpling within a few weeks.

This is a walk-in walk-out procedure and no dressings are required. From a clinical perspective you can return to work the next day but most people opt to take some time off till initial healing has taken place.

We would normally see you to monitor your recovery at two days, one week, three weeks and four weeks after the procedure.

How many sessions are necessary?

This depends on the doctor’s diagnosis but we have found the best results are achieved by a number of sessions so impact is low and healing occurs easily between sessions. Because Mesotherapy works with the body’s own systems it does take time.

A typical program for cellulite is as follows:
  • 1 session per week for the first month - 4 sessions
  • 1 session per fortnight for the second month - 2 sessions
  • 1 session monthly for 6 months - 6 sessions
A typical mesotherapy or lipodissolve program for fat deposits is as follows:
  • 1 session every 4-6 weeks to allow healing
Some follow-up sessions may be required depending on the nature of your issue and medical progress.

While this information is intended to give you an overall picture of what Mesotherapy and Lipodissolve involve, your situation is unique. The best way to find out if this is the right answer for you is to come and see us. There are no sales pitches and we will explain all the options and help you make the right decision.

How much does it cost?

We understand you are curious to know how much the procedure you are thinking of having might cost.

The truth is that with many procedures your cost can fall within a fairly wide range. While we do offer online consultations for liposuction we believe it is unethical to give a cost estimate without gaining a proper understanding of your needs.

Your body, your skin and your expectations are different to anybody else's. Some patients have been attracted by an initial quote only to find the final price was a lot higher. Sometimes these initial estimates do not cover such elements as theatre fees or the cost of an anaesthetist for example.

Our philosophy is simple. We want you to be fully informed, we want you to understand all your options and have one accurate price quoted once. Over more than 20 years of cosmetic practice we have found that this is what most of our clients want too.
