Pigmentation is a relatively common skin problem as we age. Fortunately there are a number of ways it can be treated.
Skin discolouration tends to increase as we get older and is governed by a number of factors:
- Genetics
- Skin type
- Sun exposure
- Skin injury
- Hormones/pregnancy
- Environmental exposure
Common presentations include:
- Birthmarks - usually flat, pigmented patches of varying size
- Moles - Often raise, pigmented or pale lumps
- Solar-related - Coloured patches due to sun damage
- Melanoma - darker coloured patches of different size and shape. This pigmentation may not be deep and be within the skin's upper layers
It is most important that prior to treatment the skin is assessed by the doctor. Pre-cancerous and cancerous areas need to be excluded.
At the Ashley Centre we have a range of treatment options for pigmentation:
- Medical treatment - lotions and other medications are often used to lighten the skin and repress pigment production. Often used in combination with other treatments.
- Laser and IPL - light in the form of laser or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) may be used to target the pigment, causing it to lift and later peel off. This form of treatment is useful in specific situations.
- Radio Frequency (RF) removal of moles - in certain situations moles may be flattened using the RF device.
- Excision of moles - if there is any doubt as to the type of mole or its safety then excision is the gold standard. Excision of moles will lead to some scarring but may be the only safe option.
- Fraxel - this is a relatively new treatment for patchy pigmentation with effectiveness in both shallow and deep pigmentation. This is particularly effective for people with darker skin complexions. Read more...
- Chemical Peels - various chemicals can be used to improve superficial skin pigmentation. Read more...
Some forms of pigmentation do not respond to treatment and are best left alone whether due ineffectiveness of available treatments or the likelihood of recurrence or because treatment may make abnormal changes.
As mentioned there are many causes of pigmentation, different type of pigmentation and various treatments. A consultation for an accurate assessment is essential for good management of this condition.
