IPL treatment for pigmentation

What is lPL? What can it do for you?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy is a non-invasive light treatment for acne, reddened skin, visible signs of ageing, visible facial blood vessels, sun-damaged skin and pigmentation. This is even more effective when used in partnership with PDT (photo dynamic therapy).

IPL uses special wavelengths of light to treat damaged and aged skin. The principle is that certain wavelengths of light are absorbed by the areas that need treatment but not by the surrounding healthy cells so this minimises recovery time.

Who can benefit from IPL?

IPL is suited to a wide range of clients although there are some limitations with those who have immune deficiency issues. How much you benefit depends on the problem and the extent of it. A skin assessment is essential.

What happens in a typical treatment? How will you feel during treatment?

Depending on the problem treated we may apply an anaesthetic cream to numb your skin. Although the pulsed light is well within safe levels, and is focused only on the targeted area, you will be given eye protection as a precaution.

The sensation of the treatment is that of slight stinging. You will be able to drive home after your treatment and apply makeup and sunscreen directly afterwards.

How will you feel after treatment?

Immediately after treatment your face will feel sunburnt but this will pass within a couple of hours however your skin can look red for a day or two. Generally you can expect to look worse for about 4 days but will improve after this. After around a further week your skin should start to develop a fresh healthy look.

What are the potential complications?

While laser skin rejuvenation is a well tried and successful procedure there are some issues that can occur. These are well covered in your consultations before the procedure.

How will you feel after treatment? What do you need to do after the treatment to ensure the best result?

There are some changes to your normal activities that you will need to make after IPL and we can help you manage these. During the first few days of the dry healing phase you should avoid scratching, rubbing and should avoid makeup and chlorinated water. Alpha Hydroxy acids (AHA's) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA's) which are contained in some cosmetics should also be avoided. Most sunscreens contain chemicals that absorb UV rays. These should be avoided because they interact with your skin. We can supply you with a special sun block that works by blocking and reflecting UV. This is much better for your skin than a conventional sunscreen in this sensitive phase.

When will you see results?

It usually takes about 6 weeks to see the full improvement from IPL although we often see improvements earlier.

How many sessions are necessary?

This depends on your skin and the condition you are trying to improve and can range between one and 10 sessions at the extreme. To properly assess this we need to see you in person.

While this information is intended to give you a good overall picture of how IPL may help your pigmentation your situation is unique. The best way to find out if this is the right answer for you is to come and see us. There are no sales pitches and we will explain all the options and help you to make the right decision.

How much does it cost?

We understand you are curious to know how much the procedure you are thinking of having might cost.

The truth is that with many procedures your cost can fall within a fairly wide range. While we do offer online consultations for liposuction we believe it is unethical to give a cost estimate without gaining a proper understanding of your needs.

Your body, your skin and your expectations are different to anybody else's. Some patients have been attracted by an initial quote only to find the final price was a lot higher. Sometimes these initial estimates do not cover such elements as theatre fees or the cost of an anaesthetist for example.

Our philosophy is simple. We want you to be fully informed, we want you to understand all your options and have one accurate price quoted once. Over more than 20 years of cosmetic practice we have found that this is what most of our clients want too.
