Cosmetic Skin Peel for pigmentation
What is a Chemical peel? What can it do for you?
A chemical peel uses a solution applied to your skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the production of new skin cells. It tightens your skin, reduces wrinkling and restores a more youthful appearance. A cosmetic peel is effective in treating pigmentation because it effectively lifts off a layer of older diseased and damaged skin and stimulates the growth of fresh new healthy skin in its place.
A chemical peel is not a substitute for a facelift as it cannot eliminate excessive or lax skin although it may be performed in conjunction with these types of procedures.
Who can benefit from Skin Peels?
Chemical peels are suitable for women and men of almost any age with different peels formulated for different skin conditions.
They can be effective for people with pigmentation, fine lines, freckles and pigmentation. They can also remove sun spots and precancerous lesions and they can be helpful with acne scarring provided it is not too deep. A chemical peel may not be suitable if you have dark, olive or Asian skin. This can be determined by a small easy test. If you have deep acne scars other procedures may be a better option.
There are hundreds of different chemical peels available and advertised, and it is often difficult to make an informed choice. Please be aware that experience is essential for good results. Do not be affected by advertising and hype. Used well, chemical peels can give excellent results especially for pigmentation and fine lines.
What happens in a typical treatment?
Your doctor first assesses your skin type and the desired result in order to work out the safest and most effective treatment for your skin.
Our doctors may recommend a superficial, medium or deep chemical peel depending on your skin type and the desired results. Your surgeon will select the proper chemical or mix of chemicals and apply the solution to various areas of your skin. This application encourages a separation and peeling of the skin's outer layers, revealing the new layers below.
A chemical peel is normally a walk-in walk-out procedure and an anaesthetic is usually only normally required for deeper peels.
How will you feel during and after treatment?
For the first 10 minutes after the application of the mild chemical peel there may be a warming sensation, followed by a slight stinging. This feels similar to being slightly sunburnt. With medium peels the burning feeling is stronger but is reduced either with medication or a cooling fan.
A light peel will usually be followed with minor redness and maybe some scaling in the immediate days after it. Medium and deep peels can initially cause discolouring and swelling as the healing process begins. This is followed by peeling that can last up to two weeks. Ointments and creams will be applied to keep your skin moist. The new skin will fade from reddish to a pink over the next weeks, at which point you can start to use cosmetics again. We can advise you as to what cosmetics are appropriate and those which are not. Our skin therapist is an expert on these issues.
When will you see results? What do you need to do after the treatment to ensure the best result?
Following any skin peel, it is important that you avoid exposure to the sun. Your new skin is very sensitive and susceptible to injury. Because layers of skin cells have been removed, the skin is more easily damaged by trauma, the sun and more easily absorbs unwanted chemicals, until it thickens again. You should always apply a wide spectrum sunblock, that protects against UVA and UVB rays, 20 minutes before you go outside. Our doctors will prescribe a proper home skincare treatment program to ensure fast and optimum healing.
How many sessions are necessary?
This depends on the problem treated and the strength of the peel as well as your objectives, but as a guide superficial peels may require 2-3 treatments and medium peels 1-2 treatments.
While this information is intended to give you a good overall picture of how a Cosmetic Chemical Peel may help you for facial rejuvenation your situation is unique. The best way to find out if this is the right answer for you is to come and see us. There are no sales pitches and we will explain all the options and help you to make the right decision.

How much does it cost?
We understand you are curious to know how much the procedure you are thinking of having might cost.
The truth is that with many procedures your cost can fall within a fairly wide range. While we do offer online consultations for liposuction we believe it is unethical to give a cost estimate without gaining a proper understanding of your needs.
Your body, your skin and your expectations are different to anybody else's. Some patients have been attracted by an initial quote only to find the final price was a lot higher. Sometimes these initial estimates do not cover such elements as theatre fees or the cost of an anaesthetist for example.
Our philosophy is simple. We want you to be fully informed, we want you to understand all your options and have one accurate price quoted once. Over more than 20 years of cosmetic practice we have found that this is what most of our clients want too.
